7.0 Determining the Effectiveness of Audiovisual
Cancer Education Materials for African Americans

Assessment Tool Reviews

In addition to viewer testing, the Audiovisual Materials for African Americans Cultural Sensitivity Assessment Tool can be used to evaluate audiovisuals. (Refer to Section 1.0 to find out how to obtain the assessment tool.) The assessment tool provides a measure of cultural sensitivity based on scores for three categories: format, verbal message, and visual message. These scores suggest the probable effectiveness of each category of the audiovisual cancer education material at reaching a particular African-American audience. The assessment tool can help identify specific parts of the audiovisual cancer education material that should be improved to increase the potential of the material to effectively reach members of the African-American community.

Many audiovisual cancer education materials for African Americans were reviewed during the Cancer Prevention Materials for African Americans project. Below are a couple of examples of audiovisual cancer education materials that were identified as culturally sensitive by the advisory committee. (Please refer to the Audiovisual Cancer Education Materials for African Americans Resource Directory for information on these videos and other culturally sensitive audiovisual materials on cancer.)
