7.0 Determining the Effectiveness of Audiovisual
Cancer Education Materials for African Americans

Viewer Testing

Viewer testing should include a comprehensive evaluation of the audiovisual cancer education materials by focus groups consisting of members of the African-American community. Using several focus groups will produce more accurate and valid results.

Once several focus groups have been organized, viewer testing of the audiovisual cancer education material should include the following steps:

The moderator should pass out evaluation sheets to focus group members.

Focus group members should view the audiovisual cancer education material and should make comments about the material on the evaluation sheets during the viewing.

The moderator should initiate a discussion about the audiovisual material. This discussion should be taped (only with the consent of the focus group members).

The moderator and recorder should record the comments of the focus group members.

After the viewer testing, responses from the audience should be reviewed along with comments from the discussion. Doing so may give clues as to why the audience may not approve of certain parts of the material.

Audiovisual cancer education materials should be continually tested throughout the development process. Ongoing evaluations will help facilitate the development of culturally sensitive health materials.
