1.0 Introduction

African-American Culture

The African-American community comprises a variety of groups with common African origins. These groups include Africans, Haitians, Jamaicans, Puerto Ricans, and Virgin Islanders, among others. The African-American culture consists of shared cultural patterns that bind African Americans together as an identifiable community that lives together and functions with ease. African-American culture reflects how African Americans think, feel, and act in society.[7]

Cultural sensitivity is defined in the broadest sense as "an awareness and utilization of knowledge related to ethnicity, culture, gender, or sexual orientation in explaining situations and responses of individuals in their environment."[8] To be culturally sensitive, audiovisual cancer education materials intended for African Americans should accurately display African-American daily living habits, including housing, cultural artifacts, and communication systems.
