Breast Cancer
n 1991, breast cancer was the leading cause of cancer deaths in African-American women, claiming approximately 4,809 women (13). Breast cancer mortality rates increased by 2% in African-American women under 50 years of age from 1973 to 1991. During the same period, the incidence rate for breast cancer increased by 26 % in African-American women 50 years of age and older (14). The five year survival rate was 75% for White women, during the last decade, compared to 63% for African-American women (15).
