Freestanding Cancer Treatment Centers

Texas is well served by freestanding cancer treatment facilities, and these are distributed across the state appropriate to the population density. Since it is not economically sound for every community to offer all cancer treatment facilities, cancer centers serve wide areas of the state. The duplication of services and the fragmentation of the patient volume needed to support quality care and to provide cost-effective services should be avoided. Treatment modalities can be complex and can involve combinations of surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy. Each center offers those treatment modalities that best serve their specific patient population; both radiotherapy and chemotherapy may be offered, or treatment may focus on just one of the modalities.

The centers provide treatment on an outpatient basis which can serve to further reduce health care costs. Ambulatory care services offer cancer patients an opportunity to receive long-term treatment at the community level, thus enabling them to continue to be a part of their family/community structure.
