Background and Purpose

The Impact of Cancer on Texas was first printed in 1978. The sixth edition brings Texas cancer statistics together in an updated report. This review of such a prevalent and lethal disease informs Texans about resources available for cancer control, different aspects of the disease, and about the impact the disease has on the population. This publication can be used to plan programs for cancer prevention, detection and care. This volume emphasizes prevention and early detection of cancer. Also presented in this volume are cancer screening and early detection practices; cancer mortality and survival rates for specific cancers; cancer incidence rates for lung, colon, female breast, prostate, and cervical cancers and melanoma of the skin; childhood cancer incidence and mortality; an overview of the changing demographics of the state's population; personal behaviors and cancer risks; listings of community cancer resources; and an update on cancer resources available statewide.
