Are type style and size easy to read?
Type that is at least 12-point is usually effective. Appealing and
easy-to-read fonts are simple and unadorned with dark print. Avoid script writing or
overly academic fonts.
Type that is too small can discourage readers, even if the text is brief.
For older readers, 16-point type is preferred.
Look out for any characteristics that make a font difficult to read -- a
fussy design, light colored, too many caps, or print below 12-point
type.
Is the material well organized to enhance visual appeal?
In effective materials, illustrations and photos are simple, free from
clutter and distraction. Charts and diagrams are simple and clearly
illustrate central points.
In unsatisfactory materials, illustrations and photos may be cluttered
or distracting. For example, charts or diagrams are difficult to read,
or photos contain too many people or objects so that the central point is
lost.
