Cancer Deaths and Age-Adjusted Rates
TCDC provides cancer death and age-adjusted mortality rates
for 86 cancer sites for every county in Texas. The database,
which is updated annually, currently includes annual cancer
deaths for 1990 through 2002.
For each year, cancer death totals are provided by racial/ethnic
group, by sex, by age and by general/specific
cancer sites.
Cancer incidence and mortality data have been provided by the Texas Cancer Registry, Cancer Epidemiology and Surveillance Branch, Texas Department of State Health Services, 1100 W. 49th Street, Austin, Texas, 78756, http://www.dshs.state.tx.us/tcr/default.shtm, or (512) 458-7523. To the extent possible, sub-categories
in this file match those of the population file, thus facilitating
the computation of death rates. Population data have been provided by the Center for Health Statistics, Texas Department of State Health Services, (512) 458-7261. Please note that rates for non-census
years are based on population estimates from the Texas State
Data Center, (210) 458-6543.
The racial/ethnic groups represented are: Non-Hispanic White, African American, Hispanic, and Other Races. Deaths in persons of unknown race are not reflected in race/ethnicity breakdown. Age categories are divided
into 18 age groups: 17 five-year intervals for ages 0-84, and one category
for age 85 and above. Age-adjusted mortality rates per 100,000 for total (both sexes), males and females are displayed to the right of the total
deaths for all ages for each sex. Rates are standardized using
the 2000 United States standard million population. Deaths in
unknown age groups are not included in the calculations of the
age-adjusted rates. Rates are not calculated for five or fewer
deaths and are replaced with "-----" to
designate the absence of a rate.
Cancer death statistics are available for several geographic
areas, including: County, State Planning Region, Public Health
Region, and Texas. Regions specified are regions of residence
of the deceased. The coding system used for the cancer deaths is the 10th Revision of
the International Classification of Diseases, (ICD-10).
Please note: The new age-adjusted rates displayed here should not be compared with mortality rates published previously, unless the older rates are revised to use the same standard population and the same age categories for age-adjustment, the same coding system, and the same race/ethnic categories for race/ethnic-specific rates. Please contact Dr. David Risser, Statistical Data Requests, at the Texas Cancer Registry at call 1-800-252-8059 (within Texas) or (512) 458-7523, ext. 3610 for additional information or assistance in comparing rates.
